Athena's Associate Special Interest Group (ASIG) Presents |
What Role Can Mental Toughness & Resilience Play in Your Career?

While every career path is unique, most have one thing in common – plenty of challenges along the way. Jim and Riley Pathman will teach you to appreciate challenges as opportunities and to identify creative solutions, craft your personal style, and prove your resilience. Jim and his twin sons, Riley and Shane, refuse to let cerebral palsy stop them from competing in triathlons.

On June 4th, spend the evening listening to Team Pathman explain why it pays to be tough. Get ready to laugh, (maybe) cry, and master the art of mental toughness.

Jim and Riley Pathman

Jim Pathman
CIO | Plaza Mortgage Company
Team Hoyt San Diego
Jim works as CIO of Plaza Mortgage Company in Sorento Valley. Jim ran cross country for Saint Agustine’s high school, but didn’t run as an adult.
In 1998 Jim and Lisa had very premature twins born at 26 weeks. The boys weighed 1 pound, 9 ounces each.  They stayed in the NICU for almost 4 months. Jim and Lisa were told the boys might not walk, see, hear or speak. The boys, Shane and Riley were diagnosed with cerebral palsy when they were 18 months old. They saw many doctors, specialists, and therapists to counteract their muscle tightness and left side weakness. To promote the boys' physical strength, they were involved in many activities like swimming, skiing, horseback riding and karate.
During this time Jim said to Lisa that they would continue to live the active life they had always led, and they would figure out how the boys would participate. One day Jim was in La Jolla and saw the Challenged Athletes Foundation Triathlon and the boys wanted to participate in the kid’s run. They asked why they weren’t doing the whole thing?
This led to 26 full marathons, and hundreds of triathlons and races. They have found that the running community has embraced them, and they started Team Hoyt San Diego after meeting the father and son Duo at the Boston Marathon. Through Team Hoyt they have inspired other families to enjoy running with their disabled family members and to find community, joy and connections.
