Meet The Mentors

Mike Bloom
Vice President, Global Strategic Marketing | Dexcom
Mike Bloom is the Vice President of Global Marketing for Dexcom, Inc., a local San Diego biotechnology company that makes continuous glucose monitors for people with diabetes.  Dexcom is the worldwide leader in developing diabetes solutions for glucose management that help people take control of their diabetes and live long and healthy lives. Mike joined Dexcom in 2013 after 21 years of professional marketing in the food industry for brands such as Tyson, Ore-Ida, Armour-Swift-Eckrich, Hot Pockets and Celestial Seasonings. 
Mike joined Dexcom when the business was just over $100 million in annual sales and less than 30,000 patients. Today, Dexcom is fast approaching $1 billion in annual sales and is available in over 35 countries around the world with nearly a 10-fold gain in the patient base. Mike leads a team of 60 marketing professionals that have responsibility for the product portfolio, the product instruction, the daily management of the product and the messaging for the brand around the world. He has successfully transferred the marketing approach and tactics from the traditional consumer packaged goods industry to the health care industry.

Mary Ellen Ciafardini
Executive Vice President, Human Resources | BofI Federal Bank
Mary Ellen Ciafardini is the Executive Vice President of Human Resources of BofI Federal Bank. She is a results oriented business partner with over 35 years of experience, having held increasingly responsible and diverse positions within major global professional services firms. Her expertise is in strategic human resources, organizational planning and development, talent acquisition and talent development.
Before joining BofI Federal Bank in May 2016 as the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Ms. Ciafardini was Vice President of Human Resources at West Health, a nonprofit medical research organization in La Jolla.
Prior to West Health, Ms. Ciafardini held the positions of Talent Director at Deloitte, leading the talent function for the Northeast Region and Global Director of Human Resources at Dewey Ballantine.
Ms. Ciafardini began her career at Arthur Andersen as an auditor. Over the course of her twenty three year career at Andersen, she held various roles in finance, and administration and ultimately became a Partner in 2000, responsible for human resources for the Northeast Region.
Ms. Ciafardini earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Fairfield University. She is licensed as a CPA (inactive).
She has two sons and currently resides in Carlsbad, California with her husband.

Meghan Edgar
Staff Scientist | 
Takeda Pharmaceuticals
Meghan Edgar has 14 years of research expertise in Immunology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, & Cardio vascular/Metabolism. In her role as Staff Scientist at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Ms. Edgar leads the cross-functional development of a discovery digital project tracker, as well as leading the establishment of an innovative biobank and data repository. Meghan is the GI drug discovery program lead, identifying and validating novel targets for GI disorders, utilizing cutting-edge technologies. She acts as a research liaison for academic, biotech and commercial research organizations while demonstrating her expertise in a wide vareity of in vitro and in vivo techniques.
Meghan has co-authored 6 publications to date, and has been an instrumental team member on several local research and drug discovery units since 2004.                                 

Dr. Stephen Kalaluhi
President and Co-Founder | K2 Development Systems, Inc. 
President and Co-Founder of K2 Development Systems, Inc.,  and the creator of the Waiting List Method for Coaches, Dr. Stephen Kalaluhi is a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, and an organizational transformation coach, leadership expert, and certified keynote speaker who earned his MBA from Ashford University and his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Regent University. He serves as an adjunct professor in Ashford University’s Forbes School of Business, and is a certified John Maxwell Team leadership speaker, trainer, and coach with a proven track record of increasing profits while reducing overall frustration and overwhelm.
The author of several business development and leadership books, Stephen possesses the unique ability to break down complex leadership constructs into elegantly simple, yet highly effective systems that are easily implemented into organizations of any size. Bringing more than a decade of formal leadership study to the table, plus seventeen years of experience in executive leadership roles, and six years of experience as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the U. S. Army, Stephen sets the bar for training and development, and can improve the culture, performance, and profitability of any organization willing to become better tomorrow than they are today.

Dr. Kelly Ko
Director, Clinical Research | West Health Institute
Dr. Ko is Director of Clinical Research with the West Health Institute with responsibility over a broad portfolio of applied medical research focused on senior-specific models of acute care with an emphasis on geriatric emergency care and telehealth. Prior to his current role at West health, Dr. Ko led research services for one of the nation’s largest health information technology companies partnering with health systems and provider groups executing large scale research studies leveraging clinical data for research purposes. Prior to his work in health information technology, his early research efforts focused on psychosocial aspects of healthy aging across the lifespan.

Linda Lannen
Chief Information Officer & Chief Administrative Officer | Kleinfelder
Linda Lannen serves as Chief Information Officer & Chief Administrative Officer of Kleinfelder, a full-service civil engineering firm headquartered in San Diego and with locations across the US, Australia and Canada.  In this capacity she is responsible for all information technology initiatives and services for Kleinfelder’s nearly 2,000 employee-owners, as well as real estate and procurement for Kleinfelder’s 63 locations. 
Ms. Lannen is also the Executive Sponsor for Kleinfelder’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, including Diversity & Inclusion, Sustainability, Volunteerism and Disaster Relief initiatives.  She founded Spectrum, Kleinfelder’s Diversity & Inclusion network, and serves on the steering committee for the Sustainability Council. 
Ms. Lannen has worked in information technology for over 25 years, including stints with small and large companies, privately-held and publicly-traded firms, and in a variety of industries.  She holds a BSBA in Finance from Regis University and an Executive MBA from the University of Denver.

Dr. Cathy Schnabel
Chief Scientific Officer | Biotheranostics, Inc. 
Catherine Schnabel is a biotechnology and life sciences executive with a record of achievement in scientific and medical strategy, clinical development, scientific leadership and translational research.  Throughout her professional life, Cathy has been committed to pursuing cutting edge science that will lead to better outcomes and healthcare for patients.  Driven by innovation, her experience was developed within industry leading biotechnology companies such as Genentech, Genoptix and Amylin Pharmaceuticals, researching first-in-class therapies and technologies. 
Currently serving as the Chief Scientific Officer of Biotheranostics Inc., Cathy played a significant role in leading the company from a research-based organization to a commercial entity, and her broad oversight includes R & D, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and Clinical Development. Trained as a molecular biologist and an author of many publications and patents, her leadership was critical to translating biomarkers to products that have been incorporated into National and International Clinical Practice Guidelines, and that changes lives every day for cancer patients.
Cathy received her PhD training in molecular and cellular biology at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, and was a postdoctoral fellow of the NIH and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Stanford University. She has broad expertise in both the pharmaceutical and diagnostic arenas with knowledge spanning research, product development and commercialization. She has been nominated for the Athena Pinnacle Award in the Life Sciences and the Women Who Mean Business Award from the San Diego Business Journal.

Martha Weckel
Fractional CMO

Martha Weckel is a marketing executive with a proven track record of leading commercial marketing functions to drive growth and profitability in life science companies. She is an accomplished commercial leader with extensive experience specializing in developing, launching and maximizing IVD molecular diagnostic products in both established public diagnostic companies and start-up ventures including CLIA reference laboratories. She has global expertise in Oncology, Genomics, Precision Medicine, Genetic testing and Infectious Diseases. Martha’s extensive background includes roles with Hybritech and Gen-Probe (now Hologic) launching both FDA 510k, PMA and CE marked products.  She most recently was the Oncology Brand Director and Head of the Solid Tumor genomic business at Genoptix Medical Laboratory (a subsidiary of Novartis). She is accomplished at both upstream (voice of customer (VOC), clinical needs assessment & market development) and downstream marketing (management of product manager team, product launch and commercialization, branding/positioning, salesforce training and execution).  Martha holds a B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College and is a mentor and advisor as part of the Dartmouth Alumni Network.

Dr. Claire Weston
CEO | Reveal Biosciences
Dr. Weston received her Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Cambridge University (U.K.) and performed postdoctoral research on MAPK signaling pathways with Professor Roger Davis at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She has a track record of success in signal transduction and cancer research and is also an expert in the preparation of microscopy and histology samples having previously established a histology facility to characterize a wide variety of knockout mice and disease models. Dr. Weston has worked within Molecular Pathology at GlaxoSmithKline and led Digital Pathology at Vala Sciences developing quantitative multiplex cancer diagnostic assays.
