Developing Female STEM Leaders
Host Cheryl Goodman of StartMeUpLive sat down with Athena Pinnacle Winner, Navrina Singh. Navrina founded QWISE “Qualcomm Women in Science and Engineering.” Their mission is to promote personal and professional growth of women in technology in the community. QWISE gives women a platform to share ideas, seek guidance, find opportunities to grow in their chosen careers, and promotes women’s participation in science fields around the world.

To Develop STEM Leaders, Start Young
According to a National Science Foundation study, the percentage of women pursuing a degree in science or engineering is far lower than that of men. Consequently, this low percentage of future job candidates carries over into the workforce. Moreover, a related study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that just 5.5% of commercialized patent holders are female.

Navrina and her team recognized that by creating a love of science and technology early in life, young people worldwide will be inspired to engage in STEM programs. So in addition to the programs for women within Qualcomm, Navrina and her team developed innovative programs through QWISE that promote STEM education for female students in junior high, high school and college. QWISE is also working with the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) on their Aspirations Awards, which provides scholarships for girls and encourages the pursuit of computing careers.

Having more women in the STEM workforce could benefit both the U.S. economy and women themselves. Even as the U.S. continues to struggle with high unemployment, science and engineering jobs often go unfilled. Women with STEM jobs earn 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs. As a result, the gender/wage gap is smaller in STEM jobs than in non-STEM jobs.

In this role, Navrina is responsible for creating, managing and operationalizing the corporate-wide innovation program with a mission to serve as a catalyst for creating global connections for innovative ideas to flourish. The program provides a channel for all employees to bring new ideas forward to impact future technology, product road maps and patent portfolios. Navrina partners with technology leaders within and outside of Qualcomm to ensure the corporation is focused on the right challenges that intersect with emerging technologies to create compelling solutions.
